"Fences," by August Wilson.
"Fences," by August Wilson was a very intriguing play and told a vivid story. I took this story to mean that every individual has trials to overcome in his or her life and it is up to us how we deal with those trails, whether it be that we fight them and refuse to succumb to temptation or cave and embrace the subject of our desire. I had high hopes for character of Troy because he was placed at such a high place in the story and was given the opportunity to be a great influence over his family. However, as the story went on I soon realized that he was going to be a disappointment and squander his leadership opportunity. The character of Cory personally stood out to me because he seems to have dealt with many of the same struggles I have in my life. Although he had a much harder life it appears, I too have struggled with striving to make my Father proud and having a much more godly Father have been able to hear his approval. My point is that I know the feelings that go in to trying to please your Father and they are not pleasant. I was really pleased with the ending because Cory ultimately decides to attend his Father's funeral.

That is exactly how I took it as well, we all stuggle and it is up to us to overcome those struggles or not. Troy was definitly a disappointment to me as well after finding out how he treated his wife. It made me totally re think him as well. Do you think that Rose let him walk all over her at times though? Sometimes in the story I think she could have said a lot more to him about what he had done.
ReplyDeleteBoth of you are right..after all, "Life is full of disappointments, it's what we do with them that defines who we are".
ReplyDeleteI do believe though that Troy did indluence his family...even if it wasn't in a positive manner. If nothing else, they learned what/who they didn't want to be when they grew up and even if they had children. I must say that I was very disppointed when Troy said he didn't like Cory, but rather, Cory was simply a responsibility to him..."Another mouth to feed along with Rose's". Yes, Troy was not what we would call a model husband or father---but perhaps his glimpse into his youth tells us how he would be as a husband/father...he obviously didn't have the best role model either.
I was also hoping for Troy to pull through in the end. I thought he would change his ways and eveyone would be one big happy family in the end despite of their disfunctions. However, I think Cory was that success story I was looking for. Even though he didn't go off and play football, he became a respectable, hard working man who still cared about his family.
